Majorca history


Majorca has a very rich and long-lasting past, as its history goes back in time to around 3000 B.C. There are still fortifications, as well as burial chambers that come from this time. The island was ruled by the Cathagenians until 123 B.C. when it became a Roman colony. After the  Vandals and Goths domination Majorca regained stability for the 300 years to come.
 
In 1229 the island was arrived by the crusaders, who wanted to root Christianity in the spot. It resulted in declaring Majorca a Christian Kingdom by Jaime II in 1230.  The place gained lots of churches at the time.
The attack of Pedro of Aragon in 1349, which caused the death of Jaime III made the island a part of Aragon. As the place had a strategic localization, it soon became a great trading port. However, as shipping was often attacked by the pirates, and in attempt to make the island a safe place, lots of fortifications were created in important island’s spots.

By 1492 the kingdoms of Aragon, Castile and Leon had joined, the Columbus had discovered the West Indies, which resulted in a transforming Spain into a rich country, with Majorca being a crucial part of the empire. 

Since that time Majorca has been a part of Spain, and due to its fantastic landscape, weather and localization it became a famous holiday spot. The island started to welcome massive tourism in the 1950’s. One should also know that the place enjoys the highest standard of living in Spain, so many people decide to settle there for good. 

In 1983 Balearic Islands became one of Spain’s autonomous regions, with Palma de Mallorca as its capital.
